Sheridan’s two-year (16 months) Office Administration– Medical diploma program equips you with the skills you need to work productively in a busy health care office or setting. Your training will cover a broad range of topics including:
  • Medical office procedures
  • Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
  • Medical e-billing and scheduling
  • Medical transcription and techniques
  • Employment preparation and supervisory management
During your first year, you will receive foundational training in office software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and general office skills. In your second year of medical administration coursework, you will learn to use specialized medical software, OHIP billing, electronic calendaring and scheduling, and communication software applications.

By the time you graduate from the Medical Office Administration program, you will be able to:
  • Provide specialized administrative support to medical professionals
  • Produce accurate medical documents using a variety of specialized medical software applications
  • Record OHIP billing information electronically
  • Conduct research on the Internet
  • Apply scheduling and task coordination skills
  • Demonstrate essential interpersonal skills
  • Develop customer service skills through simulated patient encounters
  • Display excellent written and oral communication skills

Field Placement Opportunity

During Term 4 of your medical administration program, you will have an option to participate in either a Medical Simulation course or Field Placement (two days per week) course. Either option prepares you for entry-level administrative support in a medical office or setting. This is an excellent opportunity to gain work experience and to evaluate different career paths

Using your personal laptop computer, you can perform class activities, complete assignments, and e-communicate with your professors and classmates. The Medical Office Administration program is located at the Davis Campus in Brampton, Ontario.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

 
Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including these required courses:

  • One English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or ENG4U)

or

Mature student status. (See "Admissions" section for details.)

APPLICANT SELECTION

 
Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses). Although not a requirement, Grade 12 mathematics or equivalent and basic computer skills are recommended.

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program will be assessed and advised individually and may be considered for other, related programs.

ADMISSION AT AN ADVANCED LEVEL (DIRECT ENTRY)


Admission at an advanced level into Year 2 (Term 3) is available to applicants with:

  • Appropriate postsecondary education in office administration
  • Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process
  • Advanced standing or transfer of relevant credits earned at another recognized postsecondary institution
